Mmmmm...

I love men…
I love men…
I love the masculine shape…
Shoulders
Chests
Abs
Obliques
Legs…
I love their legs…calves especially.
Firm butts.
I love how lean they are.
I love to see them sauntering along all cool and … manly.
I like them best in shorts and tee-shirts and slippers
Or plaid pyjama pants.
Nothing fancy, just chill and sexy.
I love their voices.
Driving. It’s nice to watch them drive.
Friendships among males intrigue me.
Their essence. Is nice.
I love men.
Yummy, yummy.
Tasty.
In general
As a gender
They attract me.
They have nice laps to sit on.
Nice hands to hold.
Really.
I love men.
Art.
Walking art.
We think we know...

Oh we think we know, but we have no idea.

It is funny how some people are entirely convinced that they are well informed on a particular topic, when their knowledge is as far from accurate as humanly possible.

I read an article on Santanism on wikipedia just recently. (Kindly observe a moment of silence in reverence for the wonder that is wikipedia.) It was interesting, to say the least. The belief system is very, very different to what most people think it is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satanism

Hmmm, these days are funny nights. In these funny nights, we should all pause a second the next time we profess to know so much about any system of beliefs. We can take Islam as another example. Before we indignantly label Muslims as terrorists and proclaim that the tenets of Islam are absurd since we “know all about it”, we should stop and consider that we may be further off course than dear Columbus.

He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool; avoid him.
He who knows not and knows that he knows not is a student; teach him

We think we know, but we have no idea.

Satanists do not even believe in Satan. How bout them apples?

Disclaimer: For the dim among us, I am in no way linking Satanism to Islam. I am not connecting the two. The point has to do with claiming sound knowledge of other peoples’ beliefs (be is Islam OR Satanism) when we may in fact be ignorant.

A Poison Tree
by William Blake

I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears,
Night and morning with my tears;
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright,
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine,

And into my garden stole,
When the night had veiled the pole.
In the morning, glad I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

Too many excellent puns to choose one as a title for this one...

So I went to dinner on Friday night with the remaining two as a late birthday lime. The conversation turned to in-house nudity. This isn’t the first time I’ve had this discussion with a group of friends and the content is always interesting to say the very least. The divergent views on what is appropriate or is not appropriate can be very enlightening.

It would appear that some people are extremely comfortable with nudity at home or around family. They lounge naked in just about any room in the house completely unconcerned about the presence of family members of either gender. Others wrap themselves from head to toe when stepping out of the shower and then screech in dismay if someone manages to glimpse a bare thigh.

As for me, I’m pretty comfortable with nudity. My mother has seen my bare body for the last 22 years. I tend not to lounge naked because I figure my step-father would find that a tad awkward though … but in the event that I’m home alone, a naked stroll is fair game… and of course, what better way is there to sleep?

What say you on the issue?

The Golden Road

“Once upon a time we all walked on the golden road. It was a fair highway, through the Land of Lost Delight; shadow and sunshine were blessedly mingled, and every turn and dip revealed a fresh charm and a new loveliness to eager hearts and unspoiled eyes. On that road we heard the song of morning stars; we drank in fragrances aerial and sweet as a May mist; we were rich in gossamer fancies and iris hopes; our hearts sought and found the boon of dreams; the years waited beyond and they were very fair; life was a rose-lipped comrade with purple flowers dripping from her fingers. We may long have left the golden road behind, but its memories are the dearest of our eternal possessions; and those who cherish them as such may haply find a pleasure in the pages of this book, whose people are pilgrims on the golden road of youth.” ~ L.M. Montgomery

This piece is the foreword to a book entitled The Golden Road by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of prose that I have ever had the good fortune of stumbling across. Montgomery ranks among my favourite authors. Indeed, she drew her inspiration from the poem for which this blog is titled: “The Fringed Gentian”.

I thought the theme fitting for this particular blog, for today I celebrate the beginning of my 22nd year of life. Yes folks, I’m the birthday girl today!

I have long left the golden road of childhood behind. All that I ask however, is that I retain the spirit of hope, wonder, enthusiasm and endless possibilities that characterised that period of my life.

If I can manage to

greet each birthday with as much excitement as I greeted my 10th birthday when I finally hit those double digits
maintain that my possessions are animate and talk to each other when I leave the room
play each hand I am dealt with as much vigour as I played Sticky, Mother May I …?, In a Fine Castle and Brown Girl In the Ring
get excited, REALLY excited about the small pleasures in life like confetti, pretty accessories and new “toys” to play with
love classic literature like how I loved Enid Blyton, Nancy Drew, Baby Sitters’ Club and the Sweet Valley world
let a good bowl of ice-cream, a snowcone or a donut make my day
remember that girls’ clubs NEVER go out of style
curl up under the covers and enter my fantasy world every night before I fall asleep
adore getting all dressed up for special events
walk around arm in arm with my closest friends and never be too old to tell them how much I love them
look forward to church on Christmas eve night and get that special tingle when I walk through the doors
believe that becoming a ballerina/gymnast/superheroine/anything I want to in this world is right within my reach
live for happy surprises
kick off my shoes, throw them in a corner and run wild
stay up all night because I’m so excited about something wonderful that’s going to happen in the morning
never lose the desire to keep learning
blow out the candles on all my cakes and still believe that the wishes will come true
be as happy when I’m dressing for my wedding as I was playing dress-up with my cousins
listen to mummy and auntie cause they know more and they love me
see myself as the heroine in all my fairytales
talk about something amazing that happened over and over and over and let the sheer delight of the memory shine in my eyes
be as proud of my career as I was when I got those gold star stickers for getting 100% in primary school tests
get that same thrill before each of life’s journeys that I did the first time I ever stepped on a plane
and feel the same passion for my husband that I felt for Ace Goodheart, Derk Daring and Captain Planet

then the golden road will never be too far away.

We go together like ramma lamma lamma ka dinga da dinga dong...

Spank me! Spank me! I’ve been a bad blogger. It has reached the point where people have been screaming at me to hurry up and blog already. Deeply apologetic for the huge delay. I blame it on work and … well … general laziness…

Anywhere, here I am! *shakes booty sexily* Leh we go.

I meant to write this blog ages ago, near the end of the summer, and dedicate it to some of the most special people in my life – the A list/team/group/squad. I cannot remember exactly when or how it happened, but somehow a group of seven became inseparable. I blame it on that ancient African magic that gave us our superpowers. *giggle* Whatever the reason, we came together and there we shall stay.

Unfortunately, silly, little things known as "dreams, ambitions and chosen careers" routinely force us to separate geographically, but as soon as our planes touch down at GIA for summer or Christmas, we always reunite.

We were always close, but for some reason we seemed to strengthen our bonds this summer. Anyone who knows me had no problem guessing in whose company I could be found just about every single night of the week. Can we say sick, co-dependent relationships? I love it! It got to the point that whenever I was actually at home, my mother would anxiously enquire as to the reason I was not spending the night with my "family". Hehehehe. We were delightfully pathetic when it came to being in each other’s company.

The most touching part of our interaction this summer was the effort that was made to make sure that we all were at every gathering. It’s not often that you find people who are willing to routinely pick up their friends from any corner of the island just to make sure that all are present and accounted for. It’s a rare group of people that is willing to shell out serious money to pay for friends’ dinners because “we don’t care if you have money or not, if we going out you have to be there; the group has to be complete.”

So this one is for my sweeties; my sweeties that I saw way too often, lol. This one is for filling my nights with never-ending limes at every place on the island – from Champers to Accra beach. Despite late night phone calls that dragged me out of the house [sometimes in my pajamas no less] I would not have had it any other way.

This one is for some of the most heartwarming, entertaining, enlightening and intellectually stimulating conversations I have ever had. This one is for the head-pats, the shoulders to cry on, the listening ears and the emotional support. This one is for the smiles, the kisses, the hugs, the songs and the walks on the beach. This one is for the debates, the laughter, the inside jokes [the "incident on Kentucky boardwalk"], the bonding, the connectedness, the stories we made up, the dreams and aspirations, the plans for the future [the house and adjoining apartment complex] and most importantly, the feeling of genuine happiness I got whenever I was with these people.

I hope that the people at the University of the West Indies – St. Augustine and Mona Campuses, Loughborough University and the University of Leeds know how fortunate they are to have my people in their midst. The rest of us will hold down the fort here in Barbados until Christmas…

I have no idea what the future holds, or how long this group of seven will remain intertwined. But whether or not events – either within or outside of our control – force us apart, I just want to say that at this moment in time, these people mean the world to me.
